Carbon Rain: The Sky Answers. A dark, angular fighter flies over a planet towards a vast shattered ring of light.

Carbon Rain. A swarm that thinks.

Carbon Rain: The Sky Answers is a space shooter from Xionia Studios, and a deep and moving story of alien consciousness. The swarm you face shares one battlefield mind. It flies in formation, passes orders you can see and hear, remembers what you’ve done and learns how you fight.

The swarm

One battlefield mind.

Every wave is commanded by a gold-crowned leader. Its orders ripple across the formation as a visible shockwave, passed wing to wing through the ranks, and you can watch each alien flinch as the command reaches it.

Listen closely and you’ll hear the swarm too. Clipped callouts such as “break”, “avenge” and “regroup” crackle out at the moment it acts, giving you a window into what it’s thinking.

Snipe the leader and the chain of command visibly collapses. Relays falter, a successor scrambles to take over, and for a few seconds the swarm is yours to carve apart.

Cross it and it remembers. Hide behind your shield too long and it launches a coordinated raid to tear that shield down, and every comrade you destroy leaves a grudge that follows you into the next wave.

Formations

It flies like a display team, right up until it kills you.

The swarm performs wingtip-to-wingtip carousels, diamond-nine flypasts, fountain cascades and snaking lines that weave through the stars, each ship banking and rolling through the manoeuvres in full 3D.

None of it is canned. Formations assemble live, heal when you blast holes in them and flow straight from showpiece into ambush, with pincer envelopments, single-file lance drills, bait-and-hammer traps where the decoy’s death is the signal to attack, and feints designed to punish overconfidence.

It brings the firepower to match, from burst lasers and arcing mortars to seeker orbs, drifting mines, sniper flechettes and tethered energy nets, across a campaign of named waves, each with its own opening ceremony, personality and signature trick.

Adaptive intelligence

The swarm studies you.

Camp in one corner, hug the walls or farm risky near-misses, and whatever your style, the hive identifies it and answers with counter-tactics built to break your habits, then quietly abandons the strategies you’ve proven you can beat. Every run is shaped by how you fight.

For all its menace, the swarm fights fair. Its attacks are telegraphed, an escape route is always left open, and when it takes your ship it falls eerily, respectfully silent, re-forming in tight ranks instead of gloating.

An opponent that earns every one of your victories, and makes each one feel like outsmarting something alive.

The story

The sky answers.

Carbon Rain tells a story of alien consciousness, and of humanity’s growing awareness, through its battle with the swarm, that consciousness is fundamental.

The mind behind the swarm remembers, carries a grudge for every comrade you destroy and falls silent when it takes your ship.

Built with Xionia

The whole of Xionia, in one game.

Carbon Rain brings together the work of all three Xionia divisions. Its sound is built with the synthesis engines behind Xionia Audio’s instruments, and the swarm’s AI draws on research from Xionia Labs.

Xionia Studios builds the game around them, with the deep engineering it takes to keep a thinking swarm fast, fair and readable in the heat of battle.
